Hey. This is Emily and welcome to my intersession blog. This was HTMMA's very first year doing intersession. Intersession is a two week course taken by all gradese combined. During these two weeks, we were in one class all day, every day, for two weeks. These were not ordinary classes though, they were more like X-block. The only difference is, let's say I was in a golf intersession, we wouldn't just be playing golf, we would play golf and get more into it, for example; we could learn about the creation of golf, some of today's greatest golfers, the first golfing champion, and other educational things like that. Each teacher chose an intersession subject, and then they pitched their ideas to us. We also had the opportunity to go to four different classrooms and learn more in detail about each intersession. Then we chose our top three intersession choices. There were many to choose from. I ended up with my second choice: The "Art Miles Mural project."
Click on the March and April links. they will take you directly to my blog entries for each day of intersession.
Thx!

Art With Ms. Tish:
Today's "warm up" activity was writing a paragraph explaining our overall feelings about these past two weeks with Ms. Tish. Then we titled all of the artwork we had done for the art show tomorrow. We were also each assigned to a paragraph long description about a certain art activity we did. For example, I was assigned to write a description about the Blind Drawing activity.
8th Day With Explorer Elementary:
Today Katriel, Zoe, and the rest of their class, came upstairs to our classroom. We had a pizza party and we watched a movie. The movie we watched was Cinderella. After our pizza, we got ice cream. Once the movie was over, we finished painting our shoes and writing our letters. I'm pretty sure that today was our last day with our explorer buddies. :-( .

Art With Ms. Tish:
I liked today’s activity. I had fun making music with the long and short tubes. When we were making the music, we even came up with our own band name! (I’m not telling you what we came up with! ) We had trouble when we were trying to follow the order of the colored pieces of paper. This was because everybody in my group (Me, Cheyenne, Summer, and Claire Ann) were all going at our pace that was either slower or faster than anybody else. Instead of going straight into the activity of following the colored pieces of paper in a group, we should have started off by ourselves to get some practice first.
7th Day With Explorer Elementary:
Today Zoe, Katriel, and I got to paint our section of the Fairy Tale Mural. Zoe and Katriel each got to paint their own character from our fractured fairy tale. Katriel got to paint our “Little Bear” and Zoe painted the “Little Boy” (I got to paint the skin of the “Little Boy”).
Later today I painted more of our Harry Potter mural. We are almost done with it, but we are going to finish it tomorrow.

Art With Ms. Tish:
I didn't like the blind drawing because I am always told how great my artwork is, and then I blind draw a leopard that ends up lookig like a bunch of squigglies (but it made me laugh- lol). Even though I know that we are doing it just for fun. When we were drawing we weren't aloud to lift up our pens. I didn't like that rule because that meant that each part of the drawing had to be connected. When we were doing portraits it kind of felt like the person drawing you was observing you or something. It felt kind of wierd having the person staring at you because they stare at you for a long time. This makes it seem like there is something on your face or your hair is messed up. My favorite part of the blind drawing activity was looking at the outcomes of our blind drawings, and how unreal they looked. (Some of them were really funny!) Next time, to make the activity more fun, I would have instead of just blind drawing the outline, I would have blind drawn the color too! I can't even imagine what the drawings would look like if we did that!
6th Day With Explorer Elementary:
Today, Zoe and Katriel came to our classroom. We got to finish up our shoe painting. We also got to start on the letters that would go inside the shoes to the shoe recipiant.

5th Day With Explorer Elementary:
Today, we painted shoes for an organization called shoes of hope. Those shoes are going to be sent out to the children suffering in Uganda.
Art With Ms. Tish:
Ms. Tish showed the class a video, then we had to make a collage that is a response to what we saw in the video. The meaning of this video was that we have the power to make a difference in the world. After that, we wrote a poem about our collage. I liked when we got to make the collages out of images from magazines. The most challenging part was writing the poem. If I were the teacher, I would have shown a different video. This is because it was difficult to figure out what the meaning of the video was.
Uganda Discussion:
Mrs. Borden handed out to everybody a piece of paper that explained the war that is going on in Uganda. We had to write five or more statements that started with; I feel.
These were my statements:
1. I feel thankful for everything that I have.
2. I feel I feel sad for the people (adults and children) that are being tortured in such an inhumane way.
3. I feel guilty that i am not doing anything to help what is going on there.
4. I feel disappointed with the people that are doing those horrible things to the Ugandans.
5. I feel that what is going on in Uganda is unjustice.
6. I feel ashamed that i am always asking for more and more of things that I don't need but i want, when people in Uganda barely even have the basic needs of living.
.........................................
Today, we also finished scetching out our designs onto our murals. Both the fairy tale themed mural, and the Harry Potter mural.

Art With Ms. Tish:
My favorite part about today's activity was after we were done with our sculptures. This is because once our group was done, we got to see what the other group's sculpture looked like. This was fun because we really got go wild with our imaginations. The most challenging part about this activity was the first few minutes of building our sculpture. This is because that was the time we had to brainstorm what we wanted our sculpture to be. Next time, I think that my group and I should have worked more together on this. The way that my group worked on our sculpure was we worked individually. Gradually we would start to put them all together and imagine what it could be. The way the other group worked was they started with a base, and just built off of that by adding things on. If our group had to work like that, then I think our ending product would have been way different than the way it turned out using our method of working.
4th Day With Explorer Elementary:
Katriel was absent today, so my only buddy was Zoe. Today, I got to read her my "final" rough draft of our fractured fairy tale. I got the feeling that Zoe liked our fractured fairy tale and got the impression that her favorite part was the ending. Zoe didn't mention anything that she wanted to change about the story. I liked the process we went through while writing the fractured fairy tale with Zoe and Katriel. I liked it because we didn't have to rush through anything and we went step by step. This also helped them really get the feel for what we were doing. My favorite part about working with Zoe and Katriel was that I felt like a teacher when I was with them. Also, I had never been inside of Explorer Elementary before, and this gave me the chance. The msot challenging part of working with Zoe was that she was really shy, so it was hard to get her talking. It was hard to work with Katriel because the point of writing a fractured fairy tale was that you had to change things about the original fairy tale. When I was asking her questions having to do with what she wanted to change, she just kept telling me that she wanted to keep everything the same. Next time, i would prepare more with questions, ideas, and ice-breakers to get them talking.

Today, we went on a field trip to Chicano Park.
1. Something interesting or catches my eye.

The reason I chose this mural painting for the subject "Something interesting or catches my eye" is because it was painted with very bright colors that seem to pop out at you. It is a painting of a large man. His skin is a bright yellow, and his eyes are a lime, evil looking, green. He has crazy, long, yellow hair. Another reason why i chose this particular mural painting is because the main character in it is very large. The painting itself looked to be about 15 feet tall. It was painted directly underneath a road (a bridge type of thing), so it as the illusion that the large man is holding up the bridge.
2. Gives me a sense of power.

This mural painting gives me a sense of power because it almost looks like there are three very important gods that are ruling over the earth. The three large heads are the three gods. The pink circle in the background is the earth. I think that if the earth and gods were what the painter was trying to paint, then they probably chose to make the god's heads bigger than the earth for a reason. I think that reason might be that the painter was trying to represent how big and powerful gods are.

Art With Ms. Tish:
My favorite part about today's activity was the overall getting to know our characters. The most challenging part of this activity was finding the confidence to act out our character. If we had a second chance to do this activity, I would have chosen to act out a different character in my story- truust me; it's hard to act out a teddy bear!! I learned a lot of new things about my character, like their favorite color, their favorite food, how old they are, and other things like that.
3rd Day With Explorer Elementary:
Today, we got to share the first half of our fractured fairy tale with our Explorer buddies. I got the impression that they really liked my story so far. They told me that it was good and we did a good job changing some of the elements. They also told me that they could tell still which fairy tale a had fractured (which was a good thing). They suggested that i add more detail to what a mess the kitchen was because of the hungry bear. They didn't exactly overflow with ideas like i had expected them to, but i still think we will meet the requirements and story elements of the Fractured Fairy Tale Writing Project. I think that I will keep all of the ideas that my Explorer buddies gave me.

Art With Ms. Tish:
Today, we worked with clay. After we finished with our clay, we placed them on the practice mural we made the day before. We each had to strategically place or clay models onto the paper because we would need to create our own story. We all took turns telling our part of the story. Your part of the story was about your clay model, and it had to be a smooth and flowing story. My favorite part of today's activity was working with the clay. I thought that this was alot of fun because when we were building with the clay, we were talking and giggling about everything; like what our clay models looked like before they were done, and what they could be. The part that I found challenging was when we had to make up the story about all of our models that we had placed on our mural. In Ms. Tish's lesson, we took turns but we each had the freedom to say more than one sentence. The way that I am used to playing is where we go around in a circle, each of us only aloud to say one word. I think we should have done it that way because it is much more fun. Also because it gets people talking more, and by the end of the story we realize how silly and funny the it sounded.
2nd Day With Explorer Elementary:
The fairy tale that I chose to fracture is Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I chose this fairy tale because it is my favorite fairy tale, and I know the story very well. Also, I thought it would be easiest to fracture. Thankfully, I had no complaints coming from my Explorer buddies about the fairy tale that I chose. One of my Explorer buddies suggested that instead of there being one person and three bears, there should be one bear, and three people. They also thought that the setting should be in a house in New York City. The feedback was sort of helpful, but their ideas weren't as far out as I was hoping. We're kind of changing the charactors around, but we are more just turning it around backwards. We are also going to change the setting, the conflict, and the resolution. I had fun today with my Explorer buddies. I enjoyed reading the original fairy tale to them- and let me tell you; the questions never stopped coming! Overall, I thought today's session went well.

1st day with Explorer Elementary:
I think that our first day went great! We got to meet our new buddies, and learn about them. My buddies names are Zoe and Katriel. They are both girls just like me. They were also both born in California and both have at least have one brother. Zoe and I both have fun when we are at friend's houses. Me and Zoe also both like the movie/story Mulan, and both me and Katriel like the movie/story Sleeping Beauty. I found out that the reason that Zoe likes the movie Mulan the best is because she doesn't like the whole gooey gooey princess thing. As for Katriel; she said she kind of liked the whole princess thing, as well as agreeing with Zoe. We noticed that one of the things that most fairy tales have in common, is that there is always a happy ending.
Art With Ms. Tish:
I had a lot of fun today. We got to paint two practice murals. We all got a different color paint and a paint brush. Then she lined us up infront of the mural paper that hung on the wall. We all had a few turns to walk next to and paint across the mural paper. After we finished the first one, we observed it and talked about what we noticed, liked, and didn't like. For the second practice mural, we had to paint the mural paper using a different technique than regular brush strokes. For example; splattering the paint, using your hands/fingers, etc. After we all got cleaned up, we wrote about what we saw in either the first, or the second mural. We had to write in depth using descriptive words. We then shared out what we had written. I think that the most challenging part of this activity was trying to imagine what kind of things we saw in the mural. This is because we really needed to be creative and detailed. One thing that I could've shanged about Ms. Tish's lesson today is that instead of individually writing about the things we saw in the murals, I would have rather discussed it as a group. I also think that Ms. Tish could have elaborated on what the reason was for using the various techniques.
